The Night Watch

Mission 2 – Elicitation

Walkthrough

The mission begins in the attic you entered at the end of Mission 1. Pick open the floor hatch, shoot a rope arrow into the beam above the hole and lower yourself to the floor below.

Go through the wooden door into a small storage room. Move the chair in the corner, pick up a coin (+5) from the floor then open the chest which contains a statue (+15 = 20). Help yourself to some flares that are lying on top of a barrel and pick some moss arrows from the water and andmore that are growing in cracks on the north wall. (You have to get quite close to many items in this mission to get them to highlight.) Return to the hallway and turn left. Open a set of white sliding doors and quietly enter a small observatory room.

The Observatory

The astronomer dozing at the table is wearing the Spiral Stair key so gently relieve him of it then leave the room. Creep down the stairs, unlock the gate at the bottom and sneak in behind the guard. Take his note and his blackjack then go back up the stairs. On the way up, remove the grate blocking the window opening beside the locked metal door and peek in. You'll see some valuables which include a golden egg. You'll receive a new optional objective to find a way to get the egg.

Return to the observatory and search the desk. Pick up a large gold key that's been hidden away behind the clock. Pick up and read a crumpled note that's fallen near the waste paper basket. The poem near the top contains some important clues so read it carefully.

Approach the crystal ball that is sitting on the table and read the sign which says "Gaze deep that thou see what time hides from thee." Lean in and look deep into the crystal ball and you've found Secret #1. A banner in the north wall will slide aside to reveal a cupboard which contains a bottle of anointing oil, 2 healing potions, a purse (+100 = 120) and a scroll. Read it and you'll find mention of a number of valuable-sounding items and then receive objectives to acquire them. Only the mask must be found. Locating the other items is optional. Pocket a tiny gold globe statue (+100 = 220) from a table then leave the observatory.

Descend the spiral stairs to the point where you see a small flight of stairs on the left leading up to a pair of curtains. Climb the stairs and go through the curtains but walk very quietly. To your right is a statue with a chair in front of it. Stand on the chair and pull out the 2 gems (+200 = 420) that are the statue's eyes. Push the chair aside and pick up a pitch black mask (+50 = 470) that had slipped down between the chair and the statue base. Read the writing that was behind the mask then go round to the back and push a button on the base of the statue. The filigree door will open.

The next room is guarded not only by an ever vigilant watcher eye but also by a small device that you can't see at the moment but you did read about it in Mission 1. It was described as being well armed and reacting to even the smallest of noises so be VERY quiet in this area. Luckily, you have a good supply of moss arrows to use on the tiled floor.

The Golden Egg

Climb the ladder to the right and you'll see a code device, which was mentioned in the letter you took from the guard at the bottom of the spiral stairs. Unfortunately it didn't tell you the code so you'll have to see if you can figure it out. Climb back down, move into the room and look for a metal hatch set into the ceiling. Put down a moss arrow below it then jump high enough to open it. Shoot a rope arrow into the ceiling above the hole, climb up and you'll see a closed gate on the south side. Push a button set into a hole to open the gate. Now you have to find a way to get through it. Sometimes you can jump from the rope arrow to the ledge but if you have trouble with that, try climbing a bit higher and jumping onto the ledge to the north. From there, you should be able to walk across the gap and land on the south ledge.

Quietly creep along the passageway, and on the left you'll see a small metal box. Pick it up and you have found Secret #2! You can see the back of the code panel which allows you to figure out which buttons have been pushed in, and which haven't.

Pull out the grate that's blocking the passageway and behind it is the wonky fan that was mentioned in earlier note you found. The cause of the noise seems to be a pair of dice that are being hit by the fan.

This is another clue to the code which is "Dice".

Turn around, drop back down to the lower room, then climb the ladder and enter the code into the device to shut off the fan. Climb back up into the pipe, and you should now be able to squeeze along the left-hand wall to get past the fan. Remove the grate in the right hand wall at the end of the passageway, and you'll see a pipe that goes down. Shoot a rope arrow into the ceiling, climb down to the bottom and you'll find yourself in the room where the golden egg is being kept.

In the partially open chest you'll find a mask (+50 = 520), and an LC tapestry (+150 = 670). The Golden Egg (+100 = 770) is sitting on top of the cabinet beside the chest so tuck it in your swag bag. Objective complete!

Collect the 2 statues (+30 = 800) that are also displayed on top of the cabinet and read the letters scattered around. Take a purse (+100 = 900) from Scurrish, the man sitting in the wheelchair by the desk, then pick up a gold coinstack (+25 = 925) and a gold coin (+20 = 945) from the top of the bookcase. The box sitting here contains a purse (+100 = 1045) and a gold coinstack (+25 = 1070). There's a parcel on the floor beside the cabinet. Pick it up and frob it to open it. Inside are three frogbeast eggs which you can add to your arsenal. Go over to the door and take the key out of the door handle. Use it to unlock the door and go back out to the spiral staircase. Return to the room with the watcher and creep around the perimeter of the room, taking care to stay out of the view of the watcher then crouch down and go through the black hole in the west wall.

The Throne Room

Follow the white line through the black tunnel, and you'll emerge in front of a huge golden door. Read the note posted on the left wall which mentions a huge arrow and also some creatures called arachnians. Use the large gold key to unlock the gold door and go through into a hallway that leads to a throne room. Just before you enter the room, you'll see the slumped body of Cecil Blander and the corpse of an arachnian. Frob Cecil's body and you'll acquire a sword.

Step into the room and you'll see an arachnian to the right and another to the left. Deal with them then approach the altar sitting in the middle of the room. (They're quite fierce fighters but if you can approach them undetected, an arrow deals with them nicely.) Pick up an orb (+100 = 1170), a scepter (+50 = 1220) and a golden plate (+50 = 1270). Look above your head, and you'll see a huge arrow pointing at the thrones. Now might be a good time to read over the crumpled note you found in the observatory. Of course, the whole room is arrow-shaped so the room itself is the arrow!

Walk over, climb up on the left-hand throne and inspect the carved faces above the message inscribed on the wall. One of them seems to be wearing glasses which could be the "weakened eyes" described in the poem. Use the anointing oil on that stone and the right-hand throne will slide out, revealing a hole in the wall.

The Fairy

Enter carefully as there's an arachnian lurking in here. Pick up 2 crowns (+300 = 1570) that are sitting on the floor to the left then grab the rat's cheese that's being nibbled on by a couple of rodents. Climb the rungs that are mounted on the west wall right up through a spider web and then a puddle of water. Check the ledge at the top for a jar (+20 = 1590) and a special key. You just found Secret #3! Objective complete!

Climb back down to the spider web, but watch out for the occupant! If he's giving you too much trouble, leave the loot until later as someone will come and take care of him for you. Collect a statue (+15 = 1605) from a small alcove in the wall and the 2 gold skulls (+200 = 1805).

Now frob the big round golden plaque. (This unlocks the cover over the Golden book in the room with the watcher.)

Squeeze past the golden plaque into the passageway beyond, walk along the hallway and you'll come to a dead thief in an alcove on the right. Take the note from his hand and read it. It says something about tempting a rat creature and coincidentally the rat is walking in and out of the door just beyond this alcove. If you go over and peek through the door, you'll see a tiny scroll sitting on a table. It's a bit difficult to pick up, but if you manage it you'll see that it says that these tiny creatures are bound to the Maiden of the Pearl. They are required to light and protects seekers even if it means their own death but they will do no more than that.

Turn around and walk down the passageway until you come to a small alcove in the left. Read the plaque on the back wall, which indicates that you need to find some sort of offering to tempt Quiffly (the little rat man) out of his home. Listen to the fairy's speech and wait for the dust that is pouring into the alcove to form a bowl. While this is going on the fairy will fly out.  If you didn't kill the spider earlier she will slay it now!

When the dust stops pouring drop the rat's cheese into the bowl. Take the cheese back and the fairy will tell you that you only need to hold it out in front of you to get Quiffly to light your way to the Horath and then to attack it while you try to get the Pearl. Follow her instructions and hold the cheese out in front of you then go with Quiffly through the passageways. (He will walk ahead of you in the direction that you are looking - don't look down, that will confuse him.)

The Pearl, the Mask, the Crystal and the Coin

Walk along the passageway opposite the offering bowl, turn left at the corner then left again. Walk along this passageway to the corpse at the end and look left (E). Ahead of you is a bridge that needs to be lowered and the Horath is just ahead on the right, concealed in an alcove. Quiffly will lower the bridge and start fighting with the Horath, giving you a chance to get by. Before you do so, pick up the two healing potions near the corpse. (If for some reason you cannot get Quiffly to come out, use the special key you found to unlock the lockbox near the Horath and lower the bridge.)

Try to get the Horath to chase you onto the bridge while you duck into the Maiden's room. Once he's close enough to the Maiden her magic powers will be able to kill him but DON'T touch anything in the room yet. If you take the Pearl from the shell chest the Maiden disappears and the Horath will remain invincible.

Once he's destroyed, look around for his eyes (+300 = 2105). Objective complete! (If you can't find them near his bones, they may have fallen to the floor below so you can check for them later.) Now you can open the Maiden's chest and take the Pearl (+500 = 2605) wherupon the misty figure of the Maiden will vanish. Objective complete! Collect 2 gems (+200 = 2805), one from each hole in the wall.

Step to the edge of the room and frob the drawbridge to raise it. Look closely at the ground right at the edge of the drawbridge opening on the far side and you'll see Death's coin. Shoot a rope arrow into the jagged edge of the opening above the drawbridge, jump onto the rope and grab the coin (+1 = 2806). Objective complete! Jump back to the other opening.

Now lower the drawbridge and make sure the rope arrow is in the highest part of the pointed jagged edge. Climb up it far enough to get the Crystal (+100 = 2906) floating near the ceiling. Objective complete!

Go back into the Maiden's room, jump over the chest and you'll see there's water in this end of the room. Swim up through the hole in the ceiling and out into a layer of water high up above the throne room. The Maiden is floating here and you'll see the Mask in another pool of water below her. Swim until you're above the Mask then swim down and you'll drop into the water beside it. Grab it (+200 = 3106). Objective complete! Swim out of the bottom of this puddle of water and you'll drop to the altar in the throne room.

The Book of Gold Magick

Head back through the big gold door then through the dark tunnel to the watcher room. Don't try to open the dome over the Book just yet as it is filled with toxic gas. Walk around the dome and slip in between the book pedestal and the north wall. Lay some moss on the floor and study the gold pipe that runs up the corner of the wall.

Jump up towards the spot where it ends and you'll see a large round stone highlight. Remove it then use it to stand on so you can see into the hole it left in the wall. Frob the wheel you see to turn it then watch the glass dome and you'll see the gas gradually start to disappear. When it's all gone, open the glass top and take the Book of Gold Magick. Objective complete!

The East Gatehouse

It's time to get back to the gatehouse and Gwendoline so descend the spiral stairs, crawl through the hole underneath and into a familiar tunnel. Some more moss arrows have grown in the corner. Follow the same route you took in Mission 1 back to the East Gatehouse.

Mission complete.
